Retirement villages in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia surround the metro area but provides a laid back, rural lifestyle.
The Wheatbelt is known for its relaxed country lifestyle with a diverse range of ecosystems, resulting in a range of industries thriving within the region.
The largest towns of Northam, Merridin, Narrogin and Moora have a combined population of 16,000 people. The rest of the population is widely distributed throughout the region.
The area stretches over 154,000 square kilometres and has a population of approximately 72,000 people. Although the population is over 70,000 there are no towns with a population exceeding 20,000.
The main industries are tourism on the coastline and mining on the east side, due to its arid environment and richness in minerals such as gold, nickel and iron ore.
It produces almost two thirds of the state’s wheat production, the majority of lamb and mutton and half of wool production.
Transport is served by the extensive public railway system and developed major highways and roads. Highways make Perth easily accessible by road or by train.
The Wheatbelt region partially surrounds the metropolitan area but is largely considered a rural area.
